Arithmetic

Math jokes! (The square root of -1 is “i.” You probably got that, but it took me a minute.)

Arithmetic in a modern gentleman’s daily life typically begins — and ends — with calculating servers’ tips. Still, he is intrigued by the subject and recently encountered some bits of mathematical trivia:

  • 111,111,111 x 111,111,111 = 12,345,678,987,654,321
  • 1,274,953,680 uses all the digits from 0 to 9 and can be divided exactly by any integer from 1 to 16.
  • Sum the digits of any product of an equation in which 9 is the multiplier, and the result is 9 (3 x 9 = 27; 2 + 7 = 9). And this holds true even when multiples of 9 appear in a multiplication equation (8 x 81 = 648; 6 + 4 + 8 = 18, 1 + 8 = 9).
