Terms of Endearment
It makes most people uneasy to hear a gentleman state his regard for them plainly.
Gentlemen suggest their affection with non-diminutive nicknames, used sparingly even with those whom they hold in the highest esteem.
I think I am the kind of gentleman whose endearments include “slugger”, “beast” and “pumpkin”. These words may not appear complimentary, but their substitution for names and clearly ironic nature will reveal my intended meaning.
This week I will use such terms more liberally, developing into habit the communication of my attachment with a single word.
